Medicaid is personal.

Healthcare for ALL

People in the Arkansas struggle to receive the healthcare they need. Among nations with similar GDPs, the United States stands alone in its refusal to provide healthcare to everyone. ACO has a history of winning victories that expand access to healthcare, including helping expand Medicaid expansion in Arkansas and using navigators to enroll more Arkansans in healthcare.

Arkansas was the first Southern state to expand Medicaid access to low-income and working families, as part of Affordable Care Act. Today, Medicaid is a successful program that provide healthcare coverage for over 800,000 Arkansans. Despite that, lawmakers continue to try to defund the Medicaid expansion, and throw kinks into the system, such as forbidding the Department of Human Services from spending money to promote this effective program.

Read our March 2022 report, “SICK OF WAITING: Barriers to Medicaid Keep Healthcare Out of Reach.”

We believe:

  • Healthcare is a human right.

  • Every Arkansan should have easy access to affordable healthcare.

  • Those of us struggling with inadequate healthcare must be the ones to speak their truth to those in power.

  • Together, our collective power will achieve the change we need.

Our Healthcare for ALL Platform

  • We can strengthen Arkansas Medicaid by advocating with DHS to fix barriers to enrollment and simplify the application process.

  • We can make Arkansas healthier by advocating for expanded eligibility for Medicaid, for automatic enrollment and renewal across assistance programs, and for additional coverage for basic services like dental and eyecare.

  • Nonprofit hospitals and medical centers must be held accountable to their obligation to provide hospital-based assistance to low-income patients.

Read the Barriers Report

Read our 2022 report, based on surveys with some 300 Arkansans who applied for Medicaid. Based on these Medicaid applicants’ experiences, we identified fixable problems with the enrollment process. Members of our Medicaid community delivered a copy of the report to DHS on March 1.

We will be following up with DHS throughout 2022, on their review of our findings and advocating for fixes to the problems that many Arkansas Medicaid applicants and recipients face.
